Where to Start
We have found the best way to properly advise you is to take full instructions in an initial interview. In the course of that interview we first ascertain all the relevant facts, advise you as to the relevant law, and discuss the different options open to you.
Initial Appointments
We commonly conduct initial interviews over the telephone for clients who live abroad. In that case we ask for our fee to be paid in advance of the interview and can provide you with bank details for an electronic transfer.
|
At this point in time we do not have a credit card facility due to the substantial charges involved. We have found from experience that the electronic transfers are most efficient.
When you first contact us we will ask for your name and the name of your spouse or partner. This is so that we can check that we do not have a conflict of interest. Once you are on our books as a client we can provide you with a password so that you can study the extensive information available to our clients on our private client website.
Our Charges
Our charges are calculated by reference to the time spent. For ethical reasons we are not permitted to charge on a success related basis. It is possible for some other areas of law but not for family law matters.
If when you first contact us you can give us some brief details of your matter, we will try to work out who among our staff is best suited to deal with the first interview. We charge a flat fee for the first interview and our charges vary according to the seniority of the person involved, from £246 to £405 as applicable.
If you are a resident of a European community country then VAT at 17.5% has to be added.
We do not conduct “free first interviews”. Our clients who have used them confirm our view that they are worth exactly what they cost i.e. nothing.
Often our clients find the first interview is so useful on its own that it is enough. Otherwise in the course of that interview we can work out the extent of the further costs that might be involved, depending on the course of action to be followed. |

Where to start - Scenario Analysis Example
Mrs L thought that there was a possibility that her estranged husband was going to start divorce proceedings, and that he would stop funding the family. She needed to get advice but her husband saw all the transactions on her account. She sent an email to our firm asking what she could do.
Our solution
We suggested that in the short term she either borrow the funds from a friend so that she could at least find out where she stood. We decided that Julius Brookman would be well suited to deal with the problem and quoted the fee. Mrs L then had her friend post in a cheque and Julius’ secretary telephoned to sort out an appointment time.
