The Office for International Statistics has published figures for 2012 to show that the proportion of babies born within a marriage or civil partnership has fallen to 52.5%. Last year 383,189 babies were born to mothers who were in a marriage or a civil partnership. 346,485 were born to mothers who were not in such relationships.
However, the proportion of children born to parents who were living together was 84%.
The proportion of babies born within marriage a decade ago (before civil partnerships were available) was 59%, and 10 years before that it was nearly 69%.
